We arrived to Helsinki by plane via HEL airport. To get to the Central Train Station from the airport is very easy, quick and affordable ($6). There are two train services that head different directions, there are the I and P trains. The P train heads towards the city center and I the opposite direction. To get to our hotel we used the P line and purchased tickets at ticket machines inside the airport.
We stayed at Omena Hotel Lönnrotinkatu and enjoyed our stay. It was a very unusual concept as the hotel doesn’t have any staff present. You get emailed the door code, your room has extra towels, sheets and a little kitchenette. The room was clean and the location was great. We would definitely recommend this hotel if you don’t need the front desk staff normally. There are two Omena Hotels located close together, make sure you make your way to the correct one.
Directly across the street from the hotel you will find several grocery stores making it easy to grab snacks and water. For most of our meals we ate at Espresso House.
Helsinki is a beautiful place we definitely recommend taking one of the many boat tours they offer. We bought a tour card which included all of the boat and bus tours. These can be purchased right on the water by the daily outside market. The boat tours offer great views of the different islands and beautiful vacation cottages.
Two things really stood out to us in Helsinki. One being Suomenlinna and the other Löyly. Suomenlinna is an island ten minutes outside of Market Square, getting to the island can be done by boat, you may purchase boat tickets to the only the island or the island is included if you purchase the 48 hour tour card. The second was Löyly, this does require reservations before you go, we booked ours about two weeks out online. It was one of the funnest things we did, it’s a beautiful sauna located right on the sea, as you spend time in the two different sauna rooms, you are encouraged to jump into the cold water to cool down.
